baitfish

Wow, my first Florida report!
I took advantage of the longer days by heading down to Jacksonville Beach Pier after work which is only about 8 miles from our apartment… SHWEET! The pier is nice, it is about the same length as Malibu, with a bait shop/snack bar as well as a great Irish Pub just across the street that serves a great Irish stew. The one thing that is reall different is the admission charge, $4 for anglers all day and $1 for pedestrians. But the pier is really clean and has line recycling all over.
The fishing started out slow, I was fishing a single dropper loop rig with fresh dead shrimp and a #2 circle hook. But I was having a good time talking with some new fishing buddies, Justin and Rick of Rick’s bait and tackle. Then the Whiting started to hit just as the sun went down. I landed 4 whiting up to a pound each on the shrimp and fished another dropper rig with a Camo Gulp Sandworm and picked up two small bluefish. That stuff will catch anything I swear! The bite was going on all around us and whiting were almost flying over the rail. It made me start thinking about when the summer starts warming the water and the whiting turn into Speckled trout, Bull Red’s, Spanish Mackerel and Kingfish!
