Hey folks,
I need some feedback on high speed conventionals. I mostly deep jig offshore for pelagics using spinning gear but would like to try mixing it up with the conventional stuff. I've already checked out all the name products and noticed that the Shimanos (Torium, Trinidads) go into gear instantly, where as the Saltiga and Saltist does not. At times, the Daiwas would go in gear after 2-3 complete cranks of the handle, I also noticed a binding feeling on the spool when turning the handle before it goes into gear. I tried the Accurates but don't like the feel to them, so I'm kinda leaning towards the Shimanos.
But, My main question is. Are the high speeds (6.+ ratio) strong enough to handle a 100-150lb Yellowfin tuna? If not, do I need to look at the Avets JX and LX 2 ? Are the avets the Real Deal or just a good deal for what it cost?
Thanks in advance for ya'lls 2 cts and suggestions etc.:fishing1: ......

not sure whats going on with your Daiwa's...I have the Saltist 50 and have never had it not engage instantly...something doesn't sound right there...as for catching a 100/150 pound tuna on it...hmmm...I have 500 yards on my Saltist and with 23# full drag I'm pretty sure he would spool me unless someone was good at boat control (200 yards of 30# mono backing with 300 yards of 50# braid)...I fish from headboats so moving is not an option they are going to go for...most people fish for tuna around here (NC) with 80's...

You indeed must have a bad Daiwa Reel as the Saltiga especially will put the Toriums and Avets to shame. The Saltist is better than the Torium in my opinion as well.
Take a look at the new Pro-Gear Oceanus Lever Drag - Sweet and very well made. Accurates are a precision machine and SWEET but pricey.
For a 150 tuna I would like a Shimano Tiagra 16.
For Knife or Butterfly jigging I am using the Shimano Stella 20000 and 4000 for spinning, for casting Penn Torque, Pro-Gear Oceanus and Daiwa Reels of course their is also the Shimano Torsa's until someone comes out with some hot 2 speed reels made better than the Avets.
Just my personal opinion and preference I would go after a 100 pound tuna with a Torium 30, Saltiga 50, Pro-Gear Oceanus, Penn Torque or Shimano Torsa but again would prefer a Tiagra 16 if I knew that is what was going to be on the other end. Sure wouldn't want to have to hold the Tiagra 16 jigging all day though.

Thanks fellas, I will keep your suggestions in mind. The Saltist and Saltigas I checked out were at Cabelas and Sportsmen Wharehouse. They were surprised when I pointed it out to them, both store representatives could only say "That's how the company built them". We checked several reels in each store and all had the non-instant gear engagement with 2-3 handle turns before going in gear ( not all the time, but enough to notice) The reels were the 20,30, and 40 models. I guess San Antonio and Austin got a bad batch of reels???
Hey, next time u guys go to a tackle shop, try playing with a few Daiwas in the sizes I mentioned and you'll see what I mean.
Isn't the Penn Torque kinda heavy to jig with all day? Pro-Gear? hmmm...I'll check it out. Thanks again guys.....

Thats cool and what it's all about. We all have different opinions, likes and dislikes.
Would you put that Torium up against a 100 - 150 tuna???
I agree the Torque 300 would be heavy to jig with all day but the 100 or 200 may fit the bill very well. Can't wait till they come out with them.
