Grand Isle, Louisiana
Charter Boat DORADO
February 21-22 2006

Myself and our crew of 6 (Me, James, Sean, Les, Tony, and Bob) arrived at Grand Isle the evening of Monday, February the 20th. We located Angelloz Enterprises “CoCo Hut” which would house us for the next three nights, and settled in anticipation of the next day’s trip on Jeff Thierry’s Dorado. Even our old friend Tyson showed up to accompany us on this excursion. The only real excitement during the evening, besides a brief visit from Capt. Jeff to discuss the next day's plan of action was an impromptu visit from a friendly little river otter…

We arrived at the boat before 0600 and headed out to troll for Wahoo for a while, because the tuna bite had been real slow the last couple of days according to Capt. Jeff. Well, we trolled for a while with no luck at all, so we headed for the lump to start chunking the crystal blue water. The Tuna action was pretty quick at first as Tony, Les, Bob, and James all landed nice Blackfin pretty quickly. But then, things slowed down considerably as we were only able to land 4 more Blackfin the rest of the day. We did put out a shark rig later in the day as we witnessed a Mako in the area that had been hooked but then managed to get away. We actually had a couple of sharks take interest in the rig but weren’t able to get anything hooked. Tony was able to provide us with some excitement when he hooked into, and landed a good sized Hammerhead, which we released. We fished hard, and late, and headed back to the dock to reload and try again the next day.

We headed straight to the lump the next morning, and decided to troll for a while. We got into a pretty heavy King Mackerel bite, and had fun pulling in one after another for a while. After that we got back on anchor, and started chunking the once again crystal clear blue water for Tuna again with absolutely no luck at all. Not one single Tuna hooked the entire day.

We did put the shark rig back out again, this time with a live Bonito as bait and had a pretty quick taker, which we all hoped might be a Mako. I harnessed up and started what would turn into an over 2 hour tug of war with the shark. It took so much line Capt Jeff (mercifully) decided to come off anchor and chase the fish down. After getting the shark to show color, and run off line 3 times, I decided I’d had enough and started grabbing the spool after short pumping…I just couldn’t let this fish take line from me again as my legs had just about given out. Well the leader finally showed and deckhand Ben grabbed it as the fish turned to be a good sized Hammerhead…which was foul hooked in the gut!!

I was disappointed it wasn’t a Mako, but at least I got the chance to prove my stamina, and give my Braid Power-Play gear a good breaking in. We continued to try for Tuna for the rest of the day with nothing interested in our chum slick but Bonito, and Kings. We fished hard and late again, and decided to pack it in at 1600.

All in all, we all had a good time, as it’s always a lot of fun to fish with Capt. Jeff aboard Dorado, it just wasn’t in the cards this time around…but we’ll be back to Grand Isle to try again next year for sure.

I will be posting pics, as soon as mine are developed, and I receive others from the rest of the crew.

I’d like to thank Capt. Jeff and Tyson once again for their friendship and kindness. I’ll definitely be giving them a call later this year to set up another one of our annual 24 hour Tuna runs, out to the deep water rigs this summer.

Until then...to Capt. Jeff, and Tyson, and this latest crew I hope to assemble again for next time, thanks for a fun time, and God’s speed to all!

Me at home on the back of the DORADO...doing what I love most, no matter what's on the end of the line...

And the final result...just before we released her. That's Capt. Jeff in front and my friend Tyson in the back.

We didn't name the shark, just said goodbye...

We'll be back down to lower Louisiana, same time next year. Hopefully next time the Yellowfin will show up.

Later,
