I'm late posting - this report was from 12/8/07 - I suck! I'm sorry!
Rich, myself, and Cedric, (a friend from work) finally got to Elton after creep-crawlin' along through the fog and started trolling E/SE. We trolled...and trolled...and trolled :embarassed:, then trolled some more...then we saw something floating off in the distance. Thinking mahi kind of thoughts, we headed in that direction. It was a flipped over life raft anchored up out there! We did a couple of passes around it, then got closer to try casting to it - nothing. So we decided to pick up and run all the way to the ledge. On the way we found an incredible rip that was FULL of life so we decided to start trolling again. There was some weeds, not much, and some trash, including a burlap sack. Inquiring minds wanted to know what was in it, so I opened it up...trash!! Bummer! But we circled around so we could troll by it. As soon as the line went over it, all three went off! I thought "Man, we hooked the bag...three times!" But quickly realized that was not the case. One line popped pretty quickly as something with teeth confiscated Rich's blue and white...I'm not sure what happened to the other one, but it was gone too by the time I started reeling the one I had grabbed in. At first I thought it was a shark because it was shaking its head, but WOO-HOO! It was a wahoo!!! My first one!

It was 49 pounds! Once we got it in the boat, we looked down and there were two more RIGHT UNDER THE BOAT!!! All the lines were mucked up so all we could do was watch them!
After the high fives and hoopin' and hollerin' was over, we got lines back in the water and circled back around to try and get his friends. Try as we might, it just wasn't in our cards to get another one. We did see what looked an awful lot like a marlin free jumping WAY off in the distance. I would have loved to have seen it closer.
We called time of death at about 3:30 and headed west hoping to have a few minutes to drop a few down on the honey hole. It was pretty flat so we made good time, but I knew in my gut we should have kept heading in. But no, I couldn't resist at least trying it. We made a few fruitless drifts and after the sun had set, we headed in. BIG MISTAKE!!!! As soon as we passed the Mayport basin...FOG!! After being honked at that morning by something BIG that I couldn't even see...I slowed WAY down. I have a great gps, but not being able to see ANYTHING is a very uneasy feeling. I've gone in after dark before, but never in the fog like that. I don't ever want to do it again!
It was an awesome day, Cedric's first ofshore trip ever, beautiful weather and seas, and man what a fish!
