Met my good friend Jake and new friend Chris at my office to pick up the boat at about 6:45 and headed out to Mayport to see how bad the predicted 3 to 5 foot seas really were. We met Stan at the ramp who expressed some concern as two of our prominent local guides had decided not to risk it. After a quick look at the flag...I decided what the heck, :dunno:, let's peak out around the jetties and see how it is. After a smooth ride through the inlet, we were greeted with this...

SWEET!!! We headed out to our first spot at just under 50mph on the GPS!! Stopped about 10-12 miles E, SE of the rocks and dropped some fishsicles. Came up with some short snapper and of course the elusive, hard to find sea bass! Tried a couple more spots and finally...the keepers started nibbling!

Jake put a couple in the box, barely legal, but legal nonetheless!

Then Stan got a BIG tug and boated this one!

We fished all day until about 4:00, never going more than 5 minutes or so without a bite! AWESOME! Lotsa shorts, lotsa bass, a couple sharks, we even had some fun with the ACRES of spanish splashing and rocketing all around the boat. Had a nice ride back in, took the boat back to Dell Marine to get her cleaned up and unload the bounty.

Jake took a couple snapper and a couple of sea bass home for dinner, and Chris and I went to his house for a cold beer and an appointment with a filet knife or two. While we were cleaning the fish, Chris fired up the grill. I watched with one eye as Chris gutted one of the bass and cut the filets loose from the top leaving the meat attached at the belly. Then he seasoned the inside of the fish, put it on it's belly, and stuffed the top side with butter and more seasoning. He stuck the fish on the grill on it's belly and closed the lid for about 10 minutes. OMG!! It was yummy! I wish I would've taken a picture, it looked pretty cool too!
What a day!!
