baitfish

Alarm went off at 4:45a.m. and I jumped in the truck in searcj of my first Redfish. I met up with my buddies Thomas and Justin at Ricks Bait and Tackle and we headed out in search of live mullett for bait. We blank out at the first 2 stops and find plenty of nice sized finger mullett with a few drops of the cast net. :fishing1:
We then headed over to Guana which for those that don't know is a huge landlocked saltwater lake that has been known to be prolific for Redfish when the conditions are right. The conditions being a very high tide with a 20+ mph wind. We had a NorEaster come in on Sat. and there was a 7' tide at noon... Perfect! You mayask why theses conditions are right, well there is a dam at Guana and when the tide and wind work together it pushed water though the overflow along with bait. So the Redfish here the dinner bell and come hungry. Then anglers wade out in hip deep water and stand sholder to shoulder in anticipation of the not so rare 50+ fish days. Think Feather River meets Lake Barrett! So we got our flow troll full of mullett and got in line.
Justin hooked up right away on a nice 20-22" Red and Thomas followed suit soon after. Then I missed a solid strike, followed by another and another. ARRRGGHHHHH Then as the wind picked up and the tide became just right and the dam began to spill... This is what we have been waiting for... annnndddd nothing. :dunno: :slap: :nutkick:
The bite just about died!
Finally about an hour later, the bite picked up right in wash at the dam. I moved closer and did a cattleboat cast right in the thick of it let it sink and fish on! The fish pulled some drag and hugged the current but I brought the fish in and finally after missing 3 solid but missed strikes I landed my 1st Redfish! 18.5 " = Legal dinner! :D  :D
Here are some pics from the day...

I have to thank Thomas and Justin for meeting up with me and showing me the ropes on the reds! After countless attempts I can now free to catch a ton of them because I don't need to anymore!
