Monday 5am the alarm rings and I get right up. NOT for work but to go FISH the Mosquito Lagoon area with Curtis. Never been up that way to fish before so was excited and made getting out of bed easy.
Did the morning routine, checked the news and was off at 6am and on the road to fish. Arrived at the pre-designated meeting place and met up with Curtis and his new ride. Now since we all now that Curtis is, well, lets just say challenged in so many ways I got a few pictures to make up for his lack of rarely posting any.

So his sled is in the water and I’m thinking “This thing is way little, has to be tippy and looks like a toy.” To skip forward for just a minute – BOY WAS I WRONG – That thing is a machine and makes mine seem like a floating bathtub or something.
Anyway he takes me through Haulover Canal, read about and now have seen it. Took us out well past anywhere my boat could have gone as it would have been stuck waiting for more water to float again.
Found some reds working some bait. Curtis poled us up to them real quite like. Didn’t take long for me to figure out I needed to be rigged weedless and Curtis was kind enough to fix me up with what I needed. First time I got to see so many backs and tails sticking out of the water but couldn’t get any to take my offerings.
Curtis hooked up with a nice red that made him work a little. It was great to see my friend smile, hear him laugh and see how excited the catch made him. After all that is what we are out there for.

I love to watch folks catch fish, especially friends and when I hear line being ripped off the reel by the fish I just go to an entirely different place where nothing else even exists and everything is perfect.
Well he had to dance around up on the poling platform a bit. In fact anyone who has a push pole holder for up on his platform talk him into getting it. Even after all this he successfully landed the fish and we got a few pics.

So after a couple of quick pictures Curtis put the fish back into the big pond to swim again, make babies and keep the population growing so there will be a few around when our kids start fishing. So a nice, gentle, safe release.

We continued to chase, well Curtis continued poling. Chasing the Reds around till he had me fishing at what seems to be the end of the earth – cause it’s flat and you can go right over the side.
What? Don’t believe that? We got proof…..

Well we figured falling off the side of the earth wouldn’t be a good thing so we headed over to Mosquito Lagoon.
Didn’t take long and we saw a huge push. Stopped the boat and I couldn’t believe what I was seeing - Red Fish on every side of us to include right underneath us. Those fish are indeed Red too as the ones I am used to seeing and catching are much more silver.
Well Curtis poled after them for some time but they would not take anything we offered them. Although this was disheartening I was not completely surprised as I have wanted to fish the ML since I read about it while living in California. In those readings it said the area was heavily pressured and that catching these fish on artificials was a task and that they were very skittish as well. This indeed seemed to be true.
I was amazed at how clear the water was making it very easy to see Redfish, Speckled Trout, Sheep Head, Lady Fish, Needle Fish, Catfish, Stingrays and all kinds of Bait Fish. Also got to see to many Manatees, and even Tarpon!
The area is memorizing and so much nice than the area I fish. We have a bunch of ugly houses, trashy islands and lots and lots of Mangroves at waters edge. Seeing some sand and Palm Trees along the water was cool. Seeing no buildings and just nature being natural nature was so soothing, I could get very used to that I tell ya.
Then it was time to make a run North with Curtis acting as tour guide telling me about the history of the area and so on as we headed to JB’s which I have read about in OH SO MANY reports.
Went in and enjoyed their A/C had a Blackened grouper Sandwich which was indeed well worth the ride up. A cold drink and back to the Gheenoe for the ride home.
Well the wind had picked up and put a chop on the water but again I was surprised at just how well that Gheenoe handled it and never did even get wet. Impressive indeed but I need a little more under my feet so will stick with my boat but HOPE to be invited back out on the Gheenoe to fish again.
After hearing Curtis regale me with stories of all you folks at JB’s and out on the water and the GREAT folks you all are I just may have to meet you all. I will even try to learn how to fish so next time I can catch something to show off.
OK, that’s it sorry for how long this has been.
Curtis, thanks again man. Much appreciated and made my day.
Wishing You All:
